Fisheries and Biodiversity in the Western Indian Ocean

Welcome to the 1st newsletter of the BRIDGES Research Program, which reviews our 2024 activities.

BRIDGES aims
to identify solutions for biodiversity conservation and fair, sustainable fishing at the local scale of several study sites and at the regional scale of the South-Western Indian Ocean.

BRIDGES scientific kick-off meeting in Reunion Island
BRIDGES scientific kick-off meeting in Reunion Island
The launch of BRIDGES took place from 24 to 26 September 2024 in Reunion Island, bringing together more than 120 international participants. The event provided an opportunity to present the Program to a wide audience, to listen to numerous presentations on the work of the various key players in the region, and to create a forum for exchanges on future opportunities for collaboration around the key themes addressed by the Program.

From September 29 to October 16, a BRIDGES-RESILIENCE team met with numerous key stakeholders in the Comoros. This official visit aimed to present the BRIDGES program, discuss the activities of these stakeholders, and explore opportunities for collaboration.

A workshop on marine ecological connectivity in the south-west Indian Ocean: SIOMPA X BRIDGES
On 19 October 2024, a workshop on marine ecological connectivity was held in Cape Town, with over 40 participants. It provided an opportunity to present the winners of the SIOMPA - Southwest Indian Ocean Marine Protected Areas - call for projects, and to discuss complementarities with BRIDGES. SIOMPA funds collaborative, transdisciplinary research projects studying ecological connectivity in this region, with a focus on the Mozambique Channel and a socio-ecosystem approach.

BRIDGES at the IMCC7 in Cape Town
From October 13 to 18, we were honored to participate in the 7th International Marine Conservation Congress held in October in South Africa. The event brought together over 800 delegates from around the world, with more than 130 sessions focusing on innovative approaches to marine conservation, sustainability and public policy.

BRIDGES recognized as a regional program by The Nairobi Convention COP11
In August 2024, a formal decision was taken to support the implementation of BRIDGES at the 11th meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP) to the Nairobi Convention.
