BRIDGES Research Program

Fisheries and Biodiversity in the Western Indian Ocean

BRIDGES Research Program aims to identify solutions for biodiversity conservation and fair, sustainable fishing at the local scale of several study sites and at the regional scale of the South-Western Indian Ocean.

It is structured into six interconnected targeted scientific projects.

In this newsletter, you will find a presentation of three targeted projects, as well as news from BRIDGES, and illustrated materials to help you understand the Program.

BRIDGES AVATAR

In the Mozambique Channel, how can physico-biogeochemical modeling be used to better understand and anticipate the distribution of marine species?

The Mozambique Channel is a strategic ocean corridor, linking the coastal ecosystems of Madagascar and Mozambique. Its oceanic dynamics have a direct influence on the biogeochemistry of the region, and therefore on marine ecosystems.

BRIDGES OBSERVATION

An ideal observatory at the heart of BRIDGES

On February 27-28, 2025, 31 researchers from the program met for a BRIDGES OBSERVATION workshop. They discussed the definition of the ideal interdisciplinary observatory, designed to meet the needs of research and practitioners.

BRIDGES INFORMATION

An information system to better understand and manage marine social-ecological systems in the southwest Indian Ocean

This ambitious information system, which will be fully operational by 2026, must meet a number of challenges to ensure its long-term viability as an interoperable, secure and FAIR tool. This project is based on close collaboration between the University of La Réunion, OSU-Réunion and IR Data Terra.

BRIDGES receives “Year of the Sea” label

The Year of the Sea is a national initiative in France that honors stakeholders committed to improving knowledge, protection and development of the sea and coastline. The label is awarded by the French Ministry for Ecological Transition, Biodiversity, Forestry, the Sea and Fisheries.

Assessment and reflection on the “carbon footprint” of the BRIDGES scientific launch

The BRIDGES IMPACT team looks back at the carbon footprint of the scientific kick-off event that took place in September 2024 in Reunion Island. Using various alternative scenarios, it reflects on the impact of future events.

BIOSKETCH

Aline Arens studies biogeochemical flows in the Mozambique Channel

An oceanography engineer working on her thesis with BRIDGES AVATAR, she is developing high-resolution numerical simulations to couple ocean dynamics and biogeochemical processes. Her work feeds into the regional avatar developed by the project.
