Towards an avatar of marine social-ecological systems in the Southwest Indian Ocean: modelling and digital tools
The BRIDGES research program, through its targeted project BRIDGES AVATAR, is organising a two-week training course on modelling marine social-ecological systems.
Working on a shared case study in the Southwest Indian Ocean, participants will learn to develop an integrated modelling approach, from formulating a research question to exploring models and analysing their outputs using digital tools.
This immersive course will emphasise hands-on learning, knowledge sharing and collaborative work.
Who can apply?
The course is intended for:
- Early-career ocean professionals: master’s students, PhD students and postdoctoral researchers
- Researchers
Priority will be given to people involved in the BRIDGES program who are from or work in La Réunion or the wider Southwest Indian Ocean region.
Programme highlights:
- A multidisciplinary approach: explore ocean processes (hydrodynamics and biogeochemistry), ecosystem processes, fisheries and resource use, social processes linking fisheries and society, and economic processes, among others.
- An integrated approach: understand and apply model integration and coupling to study marine social-ecological systems through a shared case study in the Southwest Indian Ocean.
- Lectures and practical sessions: discover and use a range of models (CROCO, PISCES, ICHTHYOP, APECOSM, ISIS-Fish) on the BRIDGES AVATAR computing platform.
- Specialist sessions: explore a discipline-specific topic in greater depth during dedicated half-day sessions.
Training steering committee:
- Stéphanie Mahévas (Ifremer/MARBEC)
- Pierre Brasseur (CNRS/IGE)
- Nicolas Barrier (IRD/MARBEC)
- Fabien Desbiolles (IRD/LEGOS)
- Rémi Laxenaire (Météo-France)
- Mathias Rouan (CNRS/SantEco)
- Camille Gall (CNRS).
Stay tuned!
Application procedures and selection criteria will be announced in early 2027.
A selection of online resources, particularly in programming and modelling, will be provided to support preparation ahead of the course.
The aim is to make this training accessible to motivated participants from the BRIDGES study sites and across the Southwest Indian Ocean, while allowing everyone sufficient time to prepare before September 2027.
