BRIDGES Doctoral Training – 2026 edition

Following the BRIDGES Scientific Days on 2 and 3 December, this training runs from 4 to 9 December 2026, making the most of the presence of international experts and BRIDGES-affiliated researchers and lecturers, and giving participants a thorough, interdisciplinary understanding of the transformation of marine and coastal socio-ecosystems in the SWIO.

The training follows an integrated approach combining social sciences and governance, data management methods, socio-ecosystem modelling, and marine spatial management.

Participants : The training welcomes around twenty PhD students enrolled within the BRIDGES framework, including the 10 PhD students of the 2026 BRIDGES PhD Cluster, and PhD students enrolled in the BRIDGES targeted projects.

Learning objectives

This training takes an interdisciplinary approach to the transformation of marine and coastal social-ecological systems (SES), bridging theory and practice. Participants will be able to:

• Gain an introduction to the concept of SES and the close interconnections between humans and nature within these systems;
• Develop a scientific approach based on social-ecological systems resilience objectives;
• Understand how these approaches can contribute to spatial planning and management of marine areas;
• Grasp modelling concepts and the range of possible models for sharing representations of the SES;
• Engage stakeholders in co-construction and visioning processes;
• Develop an impact pathway using spatial management tools (and other measures needed to drive change).

Provisional program

The training program comprises four main teaching modules, supported by practical work and organised by geographical regions, during which participants are able to put their knowledge into practice and strengthen their skills. One module is dedicated to strengthening oral communication skills.

Logistics

The training takes place at the Hôtel Le Récif in L’Hermitage, Réunion.

BRIDGES covers accommodation, meals and activities.

Travel costs to reach the training venue are the responsibility of participants. Cluster students are encouraged to make use of their PhD environments fund.
